Until July 2023, Flyover Media also published The Charlton Champion, which provided news and information for the Charlton area of southeast London.
The site began in 2010 and brought news of local events, local planning and other issues and encouraged others to share their takes on life in SE7. Site readers paid for its running costs while we also sold a series of postcards and print to help boost income.
However, with many local organisations preferring to go to social media first to communicate with residents, and with the growth of The Greenwich Wire taking up more of our time, we made the difficult decision to close the website. We’re proud, though, of the contribution we made through a long-lasting, truly hyperlocal website.
The site will remain live at charltonchampion.co.uk for the foreseeable future.
In the future, Flyover Media will examine opportunities and seek funding for future projects in the SE London area – in print, online, and in person – although for now we are concentrating on improving The Greenwich Wire.
In time, we would like to enable programmes that will give residents the skills to carry out their own investigations, and to help improve media literacy – a pressing issue with disinformation disrupting public discourse at a global, national and local level.
